MPs debated a draft resolution on the early termination of the existence of the Temporary Commission for Establishing Facts and Circumstances regarding the activities of George Soros and Alexander Soros and their foundations on the territory of the Republic of Bulgaria, financing Bulgarian individuals and legal entities and non-governmental organizations, as well as establishing their connection with political parties, magistrates, educational institutions, media, business structures and government bodies.
The vote did not take place due to the exhaustion of the plenary time. The project is put forward by the leader of the parliamentary group GERB-UDF Boyko Borisov and a group of MPs. They argue that this temporary committee goes beyond the competence of the National Assembly, as Members of Parliament have no legal basis to investigate private individuals or foundations.
It is also pointed out that Parliament is not an investigative body. They remind that non-governmental organizations submit annual reports on their activities, donors, financial sources, and this information can be found in the Commercial Register, National Revenue Agency, websites of international institutions, etc.
Discontinuing the activities of the temporary committee would be a step towards restoring public trust and reducing polarization in Bulgarian society, according to the sponsors.
The committee was created by a decision of the National Assembly on November 5 last year, but its chairman was not elected. Her first meeting was scheduled for December 2, but it did not take place due to lack of quorum.
Yordan Tzonev from "MRF- New Beginning" expressed disagreement with the motives behind the project and announced that they will be voting against it. He clarified that the goal of the commission is to investigate a network of influence, not civil society. The network also affects programs for training our children, which have nothing to do with our values, Tzonev emphasized. Thanks to Trump and his team, the Soros network has begun to be exposed from its very beginning – its financing, influence, and the impact it has had in various parts of the world, he added. That is why I do not agree with the motives of the initiators – we are dealing with something that undermines Bulgarian democracy, the deputy emphasized.
Philanthropist Soros, as we are presented, came and met with Lukyanov and laid the foundations of "Open Society" in our country, Yordan Tzonev recalled. "We are continuing the change - Democratic Bulgaria" (CC-DB) is their last "political proxy", he added. On behalf of the parliamentary group of "MRF-NB" and the party, we declare that the closure of this commission will not stop us, we will go to the end in exposing these dependencies.
Stoyan Taslakov from "Revival" asked why the temporary commission was not allowed to start working, why a chairman was not appointed to start the work. His colleague Angel Yanchev also emphasized that "Revival" does not accept the motives. We do not understand why the proposal comes from GERB, as the most active against this commission were CC-DB, he added. The group will vote against the closing of this commission. In the United States, they will think that GERB is "playing games with Soros," Yanchev commented.
We will see after the vote which parties have problems with their dependencies on Soros, highlighted Stanislav Anastasov ("MRF-NB"). Soros' network wants to rule uncontrollably and with unlimited power, this should not be allowed, it is a pledge for civil society, for Bulgaria to have a real civil society, he emphasized.
The chairman of the parliamentary group "There Is Such a People" (TISP) Toshko Yordanov expressed surprise that GERB is proposing to close the commission. The fact is that CC-DB are the face of these types of organizations, and the fact that you are proposing it, seems strange to me, he turned to the sponsors. Grants are being given for independent journalism, for 14 years "America for Bulgaria" has given millions of dollars, where have they gone, Yordanov pointed out, noting that Bulgarian governments, including the current one, allow interference in education. TISP in the European Parliament is a member of the conservative group, when they had a meeting in Sofia, they said that we are one of the few parliaments that have dared to point out the problem with Soros foundations, the MP noted. According to him, sooner or later this problem in this country will be addressed and resolved.
