Former parliament chairman, member of the European Parliament and diplomat Alexander Yordanov comments on this and other current political issues.
This is what he writes on his Facebook wall:
REACTION: GOOD NEWS
The news is a fact. The 51st National Assembly has a new chairman. This is Raya Nazaryan, a member of parliament from the winning coalition GERB-SDS and chairman of the 50th National Assembly. But it took one year to make the right choice.
On December 6 last year, a deputy from the fifth largest parliamentary group BSP - United Left was elected chairman of the 51st National Assembly. Thus, the parliamentary tradition of electing a parliamentary chairmanship from the party that won the elections was violated. Because the vote of the citizens must be respected by all elected representatives.
This is a matter of values and parliamentary culture. And any "revolutionary" experiments only erode the morality of democracy. It is instructive that after the Union of Democratic Forces won parliamentary elections for the first time in October 1991, with only a 1% lead over BSP, one of its members was elected as chairman of the parliament. Democracy was just starting, but there were democrats.
The parliamentary elections in October last year were won by the GERB-UDF coalition with a result of 26.9%. BSP-United Left remained in fifth place with a modest 7.56%, but contrary to parliamentary tradition, one of its members - Associate Professor Dr. Natalia Kisselova, was elected as the Speaker of Parliament. There were many explanations for this deviation from normalcy, but for anyone who understands politics, it was clear that this choice was not fair play. However, it confirmed the maxim that politics is the art of the possible and compromise is a creative element within it. Politics without compromise is called Bolshevism.
The necessary compromise, in order to overcome the political crisis, was made by the winners of GERB-UDF, thus giving our country a chance to escape the trap that had been created by the so-called "change" parties in the last four years. The sixth consecutive parliamentary elections were avoided this year.
Today, justice was restored. It is commendable that the Bulgarian Socialist Party - United Left supported the proposal for a rotation of the parliament chairman and voted for the change. Therefore, the opposition once again proved to be inadequate. They voted against normality. There is no dispute that today's parliamentary decision is also a compromise, but it is the right one.
In the past four years, we have had five prime ministers, with some serving two terms. Now, only one year after the 51st National Assembly, we will have a second chairman. And after 10 months, it will be time for a third. I wouldn't rule out a fourth either. This hints at the logic of rotation. But our common sense tells us that it would be better for the chosen chairman today to lead the parliament until the end of their term. But life often goes this way as well. Once a job goes wrong, it is difficult to fix it afterwards.
At the same time, I pay attention to the fact that after the regular parliamentary elections, which are supposed to take place in October 2028, it is only fair for the chairperson of the 52nd National Assembly to be a member of the winning party. This will put an end to the experiment of rotation.
And there is something very important that the current parliament must do. It must absolutely abolish the use of electronic voting machines in the Electoral Code. Because if we want to be Europeans, then let's truly be. Enough of this madness.
And it's not complicated at all. We adopt the euro on January 1 and immediately after that we get rid of the voting machines. Raya Nazaryan will lead the parliament, and Rosen Zhelyazkov - the government.
Rumen Radev will visit several more exotic countries with his bride, but at the end of the year he will return the keys to the presidency.
And gradually life will normalize. If by then Vasil Terziev also succeeds in cleaning up our dilapidated capital, we will be able to say that democracy in our country has succeeded.
We are moving forward and everyone is focused on their work. This applies to the opposition as well. They should continue to oppose and the more they do, the better it is for the government.
And the fact that even if you wake her up from her sleep, she mentions Borisov and Peevski, is proof that the government will be stable. And our European state will move forward. For Putin supporters, there will be no good news, but that is also good news.
