Bozhidar Bozhanov, co-chair of Yes, Bulgaria, said that the authorities were not providing sufficient answers about the investigation into the murder of Iliyan Filipov. He pointed to the parliamentary questioning of Interior Minister Ivan Demerdzhiev as an example. In Bozhanov’s view, lawmakers did not receive enough information afterward about the work on the case, possible motives or potential organizers of the killing.
Bozhanov said institutions must examine all connections surrounding Filipov. This should include possible relationships with people from the criminal underworld, as well as information about drug trafficking. He stressed, however, that rumors cannot serve as a basis for conclusions.
In the interview, Bozhanov also discussed public contracts for road guardrails. He said the issue was not limited to which companies had won particular contracts. The way influence is exerted over the institutions awarding them also had to be examined.
In his view, such mechanisms should be subject to institutional and parliamentary oversight.
Bozhanov opposed an increase in the tax burden. He described as problematic the approach in which the state seeks additional revenue by introducing new taxes or raising existing ones.
Instead, he said, mechanisms should be sought to limit spending and manage public funds more effectively. The conversation also touched on proposals to tax excess profits, restrictions on homemade spirits and measures in response to rising fuel prices.
