US Vice President J.D. Vance sent a letter to Mohsen Rezaei, chairman of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, in an attempt to revive peace talks between Washington and Tehran.
Rezaei is one of Iran’s most influential hard-liners. Before taking charge of the council, he was the longest-serving commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. Vance’s letter was sent at the direction of President Donald Trump.
Vance wanted to determine whether Iran and the United States could find enough common ground to persuade Trump not to issue a final order for a short, intense attack on Iran in the coming weeks.
Speaking to reporters, Trump said he approved of Vance’s effort to make contact. The president said Iran needed medical supplies and various other things, adding that he had agreed to the initiative after the vice president asked for his view.
The letter and subsequent discussions between American and Iranian representatives did not contain details of a peace proposal. Instead, they focused on a possible framework for future negotiations.
Vance supports the war with Iran but has expressed reservations about extending it.
Meanwhile, Mohsen Rezaei met with Iran’s supreme leader, Mojtaba Khamenei. Khamenei has not appeared publicly since succeeding his father, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, in March. The elder Khamenei was killed in American-Israeli strikes in February.
The meeting took place a day after talks in Tehran with representatives of Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Pakistan.
