The European Commission has described threats against civilian flights in Europe as completely unacceptable. A Commission spokesperson said at a press conference that the threats were being taken very seriously.
“Every threat against civilians is completely unacceptable, and our leading task is to ensure the security of our citizens,” the spokesperson said. He explained that investigations into such cases are the responsibility of the European Union member states.
A data-sharing mechanism between European countries has been activated, he added. The European Commission is maintaining contact with the European Union Aviation Safety Agency. The Commission has a role in areas including passenger and cargo screening, while the implementation of security rules remains in the hands of the individual EU countries.
The spokesperson did not comment on reports that the people behind the threats were linked to Russia.
The incidents are part of a wave of false alerts that has affected air transport in Europe in recent days. Some flights were diverted, while others were escorted by military aircraft.
Three alerts were also issued concerning aircraft traveling to Bulgaria. In response, MiG-29 fighter jets on duty were scrambled. The aircraft landed in Sofia and Plovdiv.
Ivan Dyaksov, director of Air Traffic Services, said Bulgaria was not the target of the bomb threats against aircraft. The airlines were more likely to be the intended target, he said.
