Greece will provide support to Bulgaria with funds for air defense and personnel, which will be stationed in Northern Greece and will cover a large part of the Bulgarian territory, said Greek Minister of National Defense Nikos Dendias today, quoted by ANA-MPA, as reported by BTA.
He clarified that he has spoken with Bulgarian Acting Defense Minister Atanas Zapryanov and the support will be provided upon the request of the Bulgarian side, submitted yesterday.
Dendias announced that, by decision of the Greek Government Council on Foreign Affairs and Defense, in the next few hours, a Greek battery "Patriot" will be deployed in a suitable area in Northern Greece, which will provide missile defense protection for a large part of the Bulgarian territory.
In addition, a pair of F-16 fighter jets will be deployed at an airport in Northern Greece with the exclusive task of providing additional protection for Bulgaria.
Two high-ranking Greek officers from the air force will also be stationed in Sofia to coordinate with the Bulgarian military command.
The Greek defense minister also announced that he will be visiting Sofia next week at the invitation of his Bulgarian counterpart, Atanas Zapryanov.
Furthermore, Dendias assured that providing support for Bulgaria's air defense, a NATO and EU member, will not impact in any way Greece's own missile defense.
Yesterday, the acting Minister of Defense Atanas Zapryanov announced after the meeting of the Security Council at the Council of Ministers regarding the situation in the Middle East, that Bulgaria will make requests for additional strengthening of its air defense if the NATO command determines it necessary.
