The topic of infants being present in the plenary hall has sparked a public debate, after MP from "Greatness" Larisa Savova sent an inquiry to the President of the National Assembly, Assoc. Prof. Natalia Kiselova, regarding the possibility of attending key votes with her child.
The leader of the "Greatness" party, Ivelin Mihaylov, commented on the situation and expressed his position on the issue to Vesti.bg.
Is it acceptable for children to be present in parliament?
According to Mihaylov, the parliamentary hall is not a suitable place for young children. He clarified that Savova had sent her request only for cases of "extremely important" voting, where she wants to attend without having to leave her child.
"Larisa did not insist on changing the rules of the National Assembly. She simply asked for clarification on the current procedure in such a situation," he emphasized.
Mihaylov noted that in some countries such practices are allowed.
"There are people who read and apply the law, like the Chairman of the National Assembly, and I think that Larisa's question is the most cultured way to clarify what is permissible," he added.
When asked what he would say to critics who believe that breastfeeding in the plenary hall is distracting or inappropriate, Mihailov was firm:
"Of course, it is not appropriate to have small children in the plenary hall. Deputies need to be focused."
He commented that during the vote for a new Constitutional Court judge, Savova was absent because she had to breastfeed her baby."
