Comedian Jimmy Durante once said that politics produces more comedians than television and radio combined. This may be true for America, but it has nothing to do with the local version of politics.
Just look at the grim characters that appear on your screen - if you stare too long, you're sure to ruin your sleep. Some are so insolent that one wonders how long they will continue to pretend to be politicians.
However, the politicians here have no equal in their persistence and insolence in trying to sell you impossible foolishness - and above all, themselves. We are overwhelmed by their behavior and especially their rhetoric, and even when one of them says something different, we don't even notice it.
Recently, even Ivan Kostov, who is certainly from a completely different class, said something about Bulgarian Russophiles, which in light of the sanctions against "Lukoil" could push our imagination in a completely unexpected direction: he did not believe in Bulgarian nationalists because they only pretended to be nationalists, while they were actually Russophiles. We sensed a drop of jealousy: Kostov seems to be afraid that they are trying to take away his leading position in the hidden Russophilia in our country. And he is convinced that he deserves it - even just because of the generous gift he made to Russia by selling "Neftochim", today's "Lukoil".
And the conspiracy theories concocted by our politicians are tasteless and impersonal and cannot be remembered at all. And this, despite the fact that there are enough facts that boldly challenge our imagination. For example, even until now, the strange performances of some nondescript individuals provoke questions - especially those of the completely anonymous Kircho at the time, who unfurled a poster in front of the presidency saying "I am Kiril Petkov and I am not afraid!"
A little later, when the aforementioned fearless activist had already toured the country and almost concluded his mission, it was the turn of Kiselova's red scarf. It was her poster - but there was no need to write anything on it to make it easier for the common people to understand, because BTV regularly invited her to their news broadcasts, just to clarify some "scandals" surrounding the frequent extraordinary elections, which was unnecessary. The important thing was to remember the image and name of the person. Just like Kircho before her, she was seen as a close associate of President Radev.
The audience, on its part, had already realized that we are in the Era of the Incidents, which had to somehow deal with the most shameful stage of the deteriorating state.
It seemed like it was worth nothing anymore. Something here and there was still marked for it - but with its thriftiness and ruthlessness it reminded of the tags hanging on the fingers of corpses in a morgue.
Is that where our affairs were heading? Will one day they recognize our little state from a similar tag?
In any case, for a long time now nobody bothered to talk about it, this silence still weighs on and it is obviously advantageous for our "leaders". In practice, they have completely abandoned control over their own state, but it does not bother them at all, but rather relieves them. It is completely enough for them to hang the "Euro-Atlantic" label on themselves - nothing else is required from them after this pompous admission.
And the Great Conversation about our next "change" - amidst the transformations of Europe itself - did not take place. The people were isolated once again. Their concerns about this change, completely natural, as well as their fears, just as natural, were not assessed with the necessary attention and tolerance.
And he was perceived and presented either as a "European" or as a "Euro-cribber" who will undeservedly suckle Euro-blood.
Europe needed to be brought closer to him by people like Commissioner Meglena Kuneva - something not only illogical but also impossible. Because the crushed, disabled and humiliated Bulgarian Memory would once again become the most advantageous ally of the Bulgarian rulers. Many ordinary people still remember that Kuncheva rashly and unnecessarily, as it turned out in the end, crossed out a significant part of our nuclear energy - this was the bloody tax we paid to our new brothers. The people swallowed this betrayal and forgot it - but they certainly understood the role assigned to their rulers - that of diligent kissers. The experienced Bulgarian politicians, still remaining, were paralyzed by the misunderstandings displayed in the local politics - and behind them mostly loomed ugly lies, nothing else.
In the meantime, they also put an end to normal media communication with the politicians. The special television interview has finally turned it into the most accommodating genre, leaving it completely in the hands of lackluster hosts whose flattery seemed boundless.
The false influences of politicians and their general vulgar language proved to be less repulsive than the intolerably stupid questions of the "hosts" - they were the bigger problem, as they aggressively covered up or even buried the Truth. In the end, the viewers got used to the stupidity - and after all, television was still the "important" place. It seems that it is no longer possible to change this.
Thus, we have unconsciously reached Kiseleva's tracksuit. Her frivolity was unattainable, but the ordinary Bulgarian consoled himself naively that it might not be entirely accidental. And as she dug into her little purse - while aimlessly wandering in the crowd of protesters in front of the presidency, and as the President of Parliament, she threatened that we would shed "blood and sweat" without specifying that she was quoting Churchill, she was still the same. Of course, the deputies never shed blood and sweat - it is assumed to be the popular "conciliation", they were satisfied with the treats with which they rewarded their political opponents.
And so, the Day of the Great Challenge arrived, when the Chairwoman headed towards her highest position, angry with the bottoms of her tracksuit.
There is a photo from this momentous moment, which will remain forever as one of the most valuable evidence of our/Bulgarian Incongruity with the rules, traditions, and Order in general. Kiselova's prominent derriere, which no photographer in the world and no suit could tame, is proof of our obsession with Chaos. It's as if we'll never give it up - as if we're afraid we won't survive without it. But let's deceive ourselves somehow.
And let's accept that from the precisely calculated Kirchov monkey tricks to Kiselova's seemingly naive challenges, we witness one and the same playful intention. Suits, swindles, shady deals and infantile acts - are we perhaps witnessing a cunning conspiracy? But what are her goals?
This question may provoke many answers - and it's not certain that among them there will be one that we even partially like. Random events push us around - but we will still remain true to our fears of not trusting our intuitions, even our own.
