"We want to make a comprehensive educational reform, it will take time, it will require discussion. The hours for mathematics and natural sciences need to be increased. That is where the biggest shortage of hours is, and there needs to be a deep level of learning. There, if a student misses something, the deficit is fatal and he cannot compensate, which leads to demotivation."
This was stated by Minister of Education and Science Krasimir Vulchev on the show "Face to Face" on bTV.
He also responded to one of the most concerning questions from parents and students - will there be a mandatory mathematics matriculation exam.
"We must take a complex of measures in the direction of natural sciences and mathematics, the latter being the mandatory mathematics matriculation exam, soon there won't be such," Vulchev said.
But he was adamant that the curriculum and teaching plan must be changed. The Minister of Education wants more hours dedicated to the Bulgarian language, especially literature.
"The first changes can be expected from the next academic year and will be specifically related to an increase in hours. Narrow specialization will not be as important in the future, basic knowledge is necessary. The programs are very ambitious in school and children and teachers are unable to study them in depth. It is not necessary for students to leave school as subpar in 12 years," says Vulchev.
The Education Minister announced that students lose 10 days per year, but it is possible to reduce this to two weeks of less effective teaching time per year. According to Krasimir Vulchev, the main reason for lack of time is that the educational system is increasingly burdened with subjects and more hours, while we expect children to know many foreign languages.
Vulchev added that foreign languages are more like hours in high school than Bulgarian language, literature, math, and natural sciences, combined.
He stated that he will propose to the parliament to have a common ban on the use of phones in schools.
