The Romanian government did not have the political courage and public support to refuse to the US. We will now see what the parliament in the country will decide. This was stated by former Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Lyubomir Kyuchukov on the show "Day Live" on NOVA NEWS regarding the US request to use Romanian bases for military operations in Iran.
"We must also take into account the fact that Iran has stated that all countries from whose territory planes take off or who assist in attacks against it will be considered a legitimate target. From this point of view, Romania undoubtedly falls into this category," commented Kyuchukov.
According to him, there is currently no reason to expect a direct risk for European countries, but the situation is escalating. "The conflict in the Middle East is escalating, the question is what will be its dynamics," he said. Former Deputy Foreign Minister also commented on the situation in the key Strait of Hormuz. "There is information about mine laying, coming from American intelligence. So far, there is no official confirmation, but there have been reports of Iranian ships hit. We will see if there are actually mines. If the Strait of Hormuz is mined, it would mean a prolonged problem for navigation and oil traffic from the Persian Gulf to the world," Kyuchukov pointed out.
"In a broader sense, Iran has managed to turn a regional conflict into a global energy shock. Tehran struggles to protect its own territory, but maintains the possibility of inflicting damage on those attacking it," he added.
