The director of the Rhodope Drama Theatre "Nikolay Haytov" Rumen Bechev has been dismissed from his position by order of Minister of Culture Naiden Todorov. This was confirmed to BNT by the Ministry of Culture.
The order went into effect today.
The employment contracts have not yet been terminated, as only the director can do so and there is currently a change in progress.
Yesterday, Bechev was accused of embezzling 580,000 Bulgarian leva from the drama theater in Smolyan. This was announced by Deputy District Prosecutor of Plovdiv Galin Gavrailov.
The investigating authorities have seized approximately 252,000 leva of the embezzled funds. Of those, 82,000 were voluntarily returned by individuals who were falsely hired as employees of the theater group.
Given the age and health condition of Rumen Bechev, the prosecution has set a bail of 15,000 leva with a ban on leaving the country. The director has assisted in the investigation.
The name of the Rhodope Drama Theater was involved in the grand scandal of embezzling money from the Ministry of Culture, which exploded after the detention of conductor Levon Manukyan, director of the theater in Razgrad.
Manukyan was arrested and charged with fictitious appointments, which caused damage to the budget.
Funds, totaling just under 1 million leva, have been misappropriated from the theater, the prosecution announced.
Real employment contracts have been entered into, but the individuals have never actually worked at the theater. They received the money and then transferred it to one of the defendants.
Four people have been charged in the case.
