An overwhelming silence shakes the leaders of the PP - their cadre, Nikola Minchev, is the first Bulgarian MEP to have his immunity requested not by the Bulgarian, but by the Belgian Royal Prosecutor's Office - for money laundering, influence peddling, and participation in a criminal group.
The loudest yellow-blue opposition to corruption has now stuck the most shameful European label on Bulgaria precisely because of corruption within their ranks.
Nikola Minchev - the shining image of "The Change" for whom Kiro, Asen, and Lena tore their shirts on the square - is being investigated for his ties to a serious scammer, in order to lobby and vote in favor of "spies" for the Chinese Communist Party's "Huawei".
No Bulgarian politician has ever been adorned with such "fame".
And no Bulgarian politician has ever stuck this shame on the forehead of Bulgaria.
He was kicked out by "The Change"!
But in fact - the whole party is already under indictment - Kiril Petkov, Asen Vassilev, Lena Borislavova have had their immunity removed and are actively protesting for justice. Well, they have reached it! And since they declared that they only trust the European prosecutor's office, that's where the loudest slap came from.
Bulgaria's MEP Nikola Minchev and four other members of the European Parliament have long been in the spotlight of the Belgian authorities and have already been charged with alleged involvement in a scandal involving money and the Chinese technology company Huawei, which has caused the European Parliament to face the procedure for revoking their immunity, reports Politico.
Revoking an MEP's immunity is a very, very serious political action. The Belgian authorities have requested it, which means they have solid evidence - at least that's how it is in this country.
The request, confirmed by four EU officials, comes two months after the allegations surfaced.
Parliament President Roberta Metsola will announce the full list of the questioned MEPs on Wednesday at the opening of the plenary session: three from the European People's Party, one from the Socialists and one from the Renew group, namely our own Nikola Minchev, former President of the National Assembly and even a potential candidate for Prime Minister.
The offices of Minchev's assistant, Adam Muhktar, were searched by police in Brussels in mid-March.
In addition to Minchev, the lifting of immunity has also been requested for Maltese MEP Daniel Attard, who is being investigated for attending a football match in the Huawei box in September last year.
The Legal Affairs Committee of the European Parliament will decide whether to lift the immunities in a process that could take up to four weeks, or up to one year in more serious cases if conducted through an accelerated procedure.
At least eight individuals have been charged by the Belgian prosecutor – including one of Huawei's top officials in Europe – with active corruption, money laundering, and criminal organization, following a series of police raids in locations in Belgium, France and Portugal.
Publications Follow The Money, Le Soir and Knack cite investigating authorities as stating that around 15 former and current Members of the European Parliament are "in the crosshairs".
Our own Minkov also appears in the Huawei box at a football match in Anderlecht, which is also under investigation. His explanations - he was invited by his assistant, who in turn received an invitation from his acquaintance, show what kind of fool we have sent to represent us in the European Parliament. According to Minchev, it later turned out that this friend of his is a key figure for "Huawei". Which is yet another proof that when stupidity settles in someone's head instead of reason, there is no salvation.
According to the Belgian prosecutor's office, the scheme has been operating "discreetly" since 2021 under the guise of trade lobbying, and has involved "rewards for holding political positions, gifts such as food, travel expenses and regular invitations for football matches".
The request for the removal of a deputy's immunity does not necessarily mean that a violation has occurred, but it is necessary for the police to be able to summon him for official interrogations, to investigate him and to make his daily routine from sleep to sleep. During this time, Bulgaria's name in Europe will revolve around the word "corruption". Corruption, corruption, corruption! And Kiro, Asen, Lena and Niki, who really wanted to travel, remain silent! Not a word, not a comment. And yet they are so vocal and eloquent.
Nikola Minchev announced that he will personally request the removal of his immunity, as he is confident in his innocence. It may be true, but politically he is finished! And this is a reason to ask - what has Nikola Minchev done for Bulgaria as a member of the European Parliament, apart from the noisy scandal he got himself into.
