Starting from January 1, 2025, the use of solid fuels for household heating will be prohibited in 9 districts of the capital in buildings connected to a functioning heat and gas network. This is the first stage of the so-called low emission zone.
The goal is for the ban to cover the entire city of Sofia after 2029.
Since last year, a low emission zone for urban transportation has been in place in Sofia. Starting from January 1, 2025, the replacement of solid fuel heating devices will also begin. The program will start with 1060 households in the neighborhoods of "Sredets", "Krasno Selo", "Izgrev", "Ilinde", "Student", "Oborishte", "Vazrazhdane", "Lozenets" and "Triaditsa".
During the implementation of the project under the Operational Program "Environment", around 2000 additional households are expected to be included. By 2029, up to 60,000 households in the capital will have to do the same. The replacement of 10,000 solid fuel heaters is planned, and the application process for citizens is still open.
The Deputy Mayor of Sofia, Nadezhda Bobcheva, also announced the upcoming relocation of some of the air quality monitoring stations in the capital, in order to obtain more accurate information. Bobcheva emphasized that air quality in Sofia is improving, but that does not mean that the air is becoming healthier.
