A mass funeral has been held for 75 Palestinians whose remains were found beneath the rubble of homes and buildings destroyed during the war in Gaza, which began in October 2023. The announcement was made by Gaza’s Ministry of Health.
Hundreds of Palestinians joined the funeral procession on Sunday morning before the remains were buried at Sheikh Radwan Cemetery. Most of the victims were from the Daraj neighbourhood in the northeastern part of Gaza City.
Correspondent Nour Khaled said most of the remains belonged to women and children who had been inside their homes when the buildings were attacked. The recovered material included some body parts and personal belongings. The remains were wrapped in Palestinian flags before the burial.
Abdullah al-Majdalawi, director of public relations and media for Gaza’s Civil Defence, said the remains had been recovered in recent weeks from several destroyed homes in Daraj.
He said the buildings had been bombed while residents were inside during the early months of the war. The victims belonged to about 20 Palestinian families, including people who had been displaced to those homes.
The continuing effort to recover bodies from beneath the rubble faces severe difficulties because of a lack of equipment and heavy machinery. Gaza’s Civil Defence began the second phase of its recovery operations in July. During its first operation, in November 2025, it recovered 333 bodies and the remains of 559 people.
The Civil Defence believes the remains of another 8,000 Palestinians are still trapped beneath rubble across Gaza. The United Nations agency for Palestinian refugees estimates that about 200,000 buildings in Gaza have been damaged or destroyed.
At least 74,475 Palestinians have been killed since the war began three years ago.
