The USA is a key strategic partner of the EU and efforts from both sides should continue towards further developing these relationships.
This was stated by Prime Minister Dimitar Glavchev in Budapest before the informal meeting of the European Council.
At a working dinner later today, leaders are expected to discuss a number of topics, including EU-USA relations. "We do not expect any surprises. With the change in administration, we should make more efforts for faster contact. The direction is clear," Glavchev said. The Prime Minister also emphasized the excellent bilateral relations between Bulgaria and the USA.
Regarding the issue of visa waiver for the USA, the Prime Minister reminded that there are strict criteria that need to be met. One of them is the percentage of rejections, which for Bulgaria is still high, but the trend is towards decreasing. The Prime Minister emphasized that the Bulgarian Foreign Ministry is conducting a special information campaign on the topic. We are working very actively towards meeting all the criteria, added Glavchev.
When asked about Bulgaria's membership in the Schengen area, the Prime Minister pointed out that conversations are being held and a positive signal is expected from Austria and the other member states. We expect a decision to be made soon, but let's not count our chickens before they hatch, added Glavchev. The Prime Minister was categorical that if the restrictions are lifted for Romania, they will also be lifted for Bulgaria.
