"The role of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences and specialized institutions is crucial. Bulgarian science has much to be proud of, and our traditions in the mining and geological field are such that our national capacity - both scientific and industrial - cannot be ignored."
This was stated by Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov during an inspection of an exploration well at the site of "Mini Maritsa-Iztok", where studies are being conducted for rare earth elements and critical raw materials in Bulgarian lignite coal. "I hope this project will provide a new industrial opportunity for the country.
I would like to thank the miners, trade unions, and management for their good coordination - their efforts are in the interest of the region, the workers, and their families," the prime minister added. Ten deep wells have already been drilled in the three mines of "Mini Maritsa East." The Bulgarian Academy of Sciences will analyze between 40 and 60 samples from each well in order to determine the concentrations of rare earth elements and critical raw materials.
Minister of Energy Zhelyo Stankov highlighted the innovative nature of the research, stating, "For the first time, we are entering the third layer of coal where no similar studies have been done before. The initial results are promising." Our next task is to make a detailed mapping of the sites in order to determine where the greatest potential lies."
Some of the samples will be sent for analysis to the University of North Dakota, USA, where the applicability of the TerraCore technology will be tested, enabling the production of concentrate with up to 90% content of 17 rare earth elements and purified high-calorific coal for industrial purposes.
"President Donald Trump has already commissioned the construction of similar machines in the USA. Our goal is for the technology to be implemented in Bulgaria as well. This will not only allow us to increase production, but also to extract critical resources with high added value instead of burning the coal," Minister Stankov pointed out.
Minister Stankov added that in the Stara Zagora region, over 30,000 people are directly or indirectly connected to the complex: "The development of new industrial activities around the mines will guarantee long-term livelihood and new opportunities for the Maritsa basin."
After the analyses are completed, a socio-economic analysis will be prepared to determine the profitability of the technology.
