At least one person was killed and another injured when Russian drones attacked a Turkish-owned cargo ship in the Black Sea. The vessel was carrying corn and had Azerbaijani and Indian citizens on board, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said.
Zelensky described the incident as a strike by two Russian drones against a ship in neutral waters. In a post on X, he said the ship’s captain had been killed and that the fate of another person was still being determined. Eleven crew members were rescued, he said, with one of them injured.
The Ukrainian president said Ukraine had repeatedly proposed specific measures to de-escalate the situation and ensure security in the Black Sea. He added that third countries had also made relevant proposals.
“Russia, however, consistently chooses terror and the sinking of commercial vessels instead of normal navigation,” Zelensky wrote. He called for pressure to restore global food security and said that everyone genuinely concerned about the issue should help.
Earlier, Romania’s Interior Ministry reported that two people had died and 11 crew members had been rescued. A fire broke out aboard the vessel, which later sank outside Romania’s territorial waters.
At around 11:00 a.m., Romanian coast guard border police were notified by the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre in Constanta about a fire on a cargo ship in Romania’s exclusive economic zone. The vessel was located about 30 nautical miles, or roughly 55 kilometres, south of the settlement of Sfantu Gheorghe.
The Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre launched a search-and-rescue operation, assigning a coast guard ship to coordinate the efforts. Border police, together with colleagues from the General Inspectorate of Aviation, immediately began searching for and rescuing crew members.
Separately, three people were killed and 25 injured in a Russian guided-bomb attack on Kharkiv, the city’s mayor, Ihor Terekhov, said. He added that residential buildings and warehouses were damaged.
