Bulgaria is fully prepared to adopt the Euro on January 1st, 2026, both at the national and local level. This was the message sent by Temenuzhka Petkova, Minister of Finance, at the high-level conference "Bulgaria on the Threshold of the Eurozone".
The event was organized by the Ministry of Finance and the Bulgarian National Bank and is part of the communication campaign for the adoption of the Euro in Bulgaria from January 1st, 2026. The conference is taking place at the Boyana Residence.
Minister Petkova participated in a roundtable discussion with the Governor of the Bulgarian National Bank Dimitar Radev, the EU Commissioner for Economy and Productivity Valdis Dombrovskis, and the Managing Director of the European Stability Mechanism Pierre Gramenga.
In her statement, she outlined the path of Bulgaria towards joining the Eurozone, which began with the country's accession to the European Union. According to her, the process has been long and challenging, but has become a strategic goal, with one of its biggest achievements being Bulgaria's accession in 2020 to the Exchange Rate Mechanism II and the Banking Union.
Minister Petkova recalled that after that, efforts have been focused on meeting the criteria and harmonizing national legislation with European legislation, including the adoption of the plan for euro adoption. She emphasized the adoption in 2024 of the Law on the Euro, all subordinate regulatory acts, as well as the new Law on the Bulgarian National Bank, in line with European rules.
One of the key stages on the road to the euro, Petkova highlighted the successful alignment of national information systems related to the adoption of the single currency, emphasizing that Bulgaria is ready from a technological point of view.
The finance minister also stressed the need for society and business to have access to objective information about the benefits of adopting the euro and the specific steps of the process, in order to dispel fears, as she put it, spread by anti-European parties.
She quoted data showing that over 51 percent of citizens support the introduction of the euro - a sign that Petkova defined as positive and indicative of public attitudes.
"With confidence, I can say that Bulgaria is ready to successfully adopt the euro from January 1st, 2026," said the minister, thanking all institutions and partners for their support on the path towards the eurozone.
