The United States is not lifting its restrictions on the Russian Direct Investment Fund for now, President Donald Trump said.
Trump made the remarks during a White House meeting with Stephen Hubbard, an American who was recently released from prison in Russia. Hubbard had been convicted of fighting alongside Ukrainian forces.
Asked whether he was considering lifting sanctions on the fund, Trump said he was “not lifting, or not doing anything” on the matter. The US president added that he was “very happy” about Hubbard’s release.
“Stupid people wanted me to put sanctions on Russia,” Trump said. Hubbard responded that Russians laugh at the sanctions.
Earlier, Russian Presidential Aide Yury Ushakov said the possibility of lifting sanctions on the fund had been discussed with the United States for some time. He added that the fund’s CEO, Kirill Dmitriev, was in active contact with the US side.
