US President Donald Trump said he intends to make a “very good decision” regarding sanctions against Russia. He said the decision would benefit the United States and the entire world.
“A lot of you don’t know what my decision is yet, but we’ll figure it out, and you’ll figure it out. It’s a very good decision, and it’s going to be a decision that’s good for the country, and I think good for the world because we’re really at a world stage,” Trump told reporters at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida.
Earlier, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Trump had established a 60-day period to assess the possible consequences of imposing sanctions on Russia and related tariffs on other countries. The review is also expected to examine the effects on the US and global economies.
Rubio said the additional analysis was prompted by volatility in international energy markets.
Trump had previously signed an executive order temporarily suspending the anti-Russian measures set out in the new law until further instructions were issued by the president or secretary of state.
On September 18, Trump signed legislation passed by Congress that calls for tougher sanctions against Russia’s senior political and military leadership and state-owned enterprises. The legislation also provides for a 500% increase in tariffs on imports from Russia and a 100% increase on imports from countries that are major purchasers of Russian energy.
Under the law, the US administration may decline to implement the measures if it determines that they conflict with the national interests of the United States.
