GERB leader Boyko Borisov admitted today that Kiril Petkov asked him to vote for their candidate for mayor of Sofia, Vasil Terziev, in the 2023 local elections, who, as we can see today, has completely failed as mayor.
"I told GERB to vote for him (Vasil Terziev). If they say we are to blame for that, I am guilty. Two years have passed with nothing," Borisov exclaimed today. He also admitted his troubles as an ordinary citizen: "I am suffering like all of you with my choice of Vasil Terziev and today I organized transportation for my grandchildren to go to school."
In light of this, I will allow myself to publish my comment from November 7, 2023, in which I predicted what would happen.
Borisov was warned about the damage of choosing Vasil Terziev as mayor of Sofia. And yet, he "forced GERB" to do it. “ The sad truth is that Borisov chose Terziev. And that "Terziev is incompetent," as Borisov's assessment is today, was visible two years ago...
Here is the full text:
"I gave my vote to Terziev, I coerced the party to vote for him and at the same time they paid people to beat me up in "Bankya". CC and "Revival" in "Bankya" played against us, and Petkov wants us to talk about tax laws and what not. Hypocrisy!" Therefore, the low voter turnout – people can no longer tolerate hypocrisy".
The recognition of GERB leader Boyko Borisov came on election night, when he surprisingly appeared in Plovdiv to give his first evaluation of the just-completed local elections. And his assessment was: "I have raped the party because of some hypocrites". Wherever one looks, this confession is shocking for several reasons.
CONFESSION FOR DEPENDENCIES
FIRSTLY, The leader of the largest political force in Bulgaria is so dependent on foreign, external or internal forces that he has staked his entire party to serve their interests.
If this is indeed the case, it jeopardizes even the national security of the country. Because if today the "forces" have forced Borisov to vote for Terziev, then tomorrow they can force him with the same persistence to do something else that goes against national interests. It is too dangerous, even to think about it, but Borisov is rubbing it in our faces without any concern at the table!
SECONDLY, it turns out that those for whom Borisov is forcing GERB are not keeping their agreement and are playing against him. The fact that they have no authority over him, do not see him as a factor, and do not even consider him as a partner, means they do not feel obligated to keep their agreement with him. Quite humiliating for General Boyko Borisov - three times prime minister of Bulgaria, winner of 13 elections, and unbeatable leader of the most influential political force! Something has broken in his relationship with him and with all of his achievements and merits for the country. The myth has been debunked! According to his own admission!
THIRDLY, Borisov calls "hypocrisy" the fact of the unfulfilled promise of those he has negotiated with.
But he does not realize that it is hypocrisy towards his fellow party members, towards voters, to negotiate with someone for something on their backs. To tell them "vote for Terziev, even if it goes against your beliefs, because I gave my word". But to whom? Why? What is the price? Has he asked his party if he can make such a promise?
Voting with "disgust" is part of the hypocrisy in politics. This disgusts people from politicians. It pushes them away! And they punish them by turning their backs on the ballot boxes. This is an admission of weakness by a political leader, of spinelessness, powerlessness and lack of will.
When Kostov used the term "voting with disgust" (on November 3, 2003 in local elections, when he had to support Stefan Sofiyanski), it was his personal attitude towards the former party colleague, with whom he had a political disagreement, but no ideological or moral differences.
Until then, this terminology was unknown in our young democracy. Passions were high, voter turnout was high, and there was no room for disgust and coercion. Society was polarized and voted fiercely for their own - openly, without succumbing to outside influences.
Today Borisov brings back this phrase with its disgusting dimension to the politics - I am ready to give up my personal beliefs, values and political stability (state security or state ownership), because of personal dependencies and to burden my entire party with this, without even giving them any explanations.
DESPERATE MESSAGE
According to Borislav Tsekov, Borisov's statement of support for Terziev at the last moment before the runoff is a sign that contains a verbal code - this is only formal support, but as an insinuation to the voter it is not a real support. And the code for Terziev was "the candidate of the government", who was supposed to unlock the protest vote of GERB against CC-DB.
If we accept this fact as true, then Borisov should not be angry at CC-DB, or at those with whom he has negotiated, that they have deceived him. He deceives them, and they deceive him. They are both hypocrites.
The breakdown of the vote in Sofia shows that the majority of the voters did not listen to their leader and voted according to their beliefs. This is a slap in the face for Borisov. Whether there was internal sabotage - not listening to what Borisov says, and voting for Vanya, is not clear.
In public politics, however, the messages must be clear, concrete, and recognizable, if we don't want to complain about hypocrisy. A politician is a public figure who must set an example for others, they are a personality that others must follow.
A leader cannot waver and claim to have been lied to because they have found his weak spot. This is a desperate and weak position.
"It is a manifestation of the cruel rule - dependent politicians are used while they are needed, then discarded.
"For me, it is important who dares and who is able to violate the largest party in Bulgaria, so that its leader eventually calls for a vote for Terziev" - this question was asked first today by the defeated Vania Grigorova in Sofia.
And from now on, this question will hang with terrible force on Borisov's door - who can violate the largest party in Bulgaria?
THE TRANSITION IS OVER
In the night of the elections, Borisov really looked like he had been violated. Tired, nervous, he wondered what to say in front of the facts about the losses, which, no matter how calculated by his team, are shocking.
GERB remains the first political force, but lost 1/3 of the local power - from Sofia to Varna, from Blagoevgrad to Shumen, from Kyustendil to Pazardzhik. GERB lost all the power in the capital, lost most of the run-offs in the regional cities, in ten of the centers its representatives stay in second place.
And they lost to those with whom Borisov negotiated how to hand over Sofia to them. Yes, the map of Bulgaria is still predominantly GERB-blue, but at the next local elections GERB will lose just as much. Because the anti-GERB vote, which emerged in 2023 in Varna and Pazardzhik, will flood in other places after four years.
The turbulence in Sofia and Varna will have the force of a typhoon and there should be no illusions in another direction.
With the settlement of CC-DB in the local government, the transition is over.
A new generation is entering politics, one that has no ideological labels, no moral barriers; a generation for whom politics is a deal. Either you take it and chase it without any scruples or you back down. The behavior of CC in the last three years is evidence of this - politics without scruples.
And to expect that you can make agreements with them based on principles, or resort to a gentleman's word, is a lost cause. CC-DB have no allies, no partners, and in this sense they lack the feeling of involvement with others. They are political predators, whose lust for power grows with each victim.
Borisov will now start to feel the consequences of allowing them into Sofia and Varna...
(P.P. as of today: Not just Borisov, but all of us in Sofia feel the consequences on our backs of him allowing CC-DB into the capital.
Without asking us!)
