"
"Startling return," is how global agencies describe Donald Trump's crushing victory. In his first speech following his second term win, delivered this morning at a congressional center in West Palm Beach, Florida, Trump emphasized that this evening he "made history" and expressed his surprise: "It is now clear that we have achieved the most unbelievable political thing... see what happened, isn't it startling?". "Trump's victory means that mainstream media in its current form is dead," wrote The Federalist, recalling the barrage of attempts by the corporate media industry to destroy him. Now, the big turn is ahead. The same will happen in our country. Bulgarian political leaders were the first to congratulate the future US president Borisov and shared a photo with him from the Oval Office with the inscription "I am ready to work together."
"Security". Exactly five years ago, in November 2019, the two sat in front of the famous fireplace. And what happened then - I will remind you. Here is my report from November 26, 2019 from a "memorable visit". We will discover some interesting things from today's perspective.
Pardew was right. Borisov and Trump hit it off. They resemble each other. On many things.
In addition to being non-standard players who can always bring a surprise.
Two hours were spent together by the American president and the Bulgarian prime minister - a time when there were protocol formalities, firm handshakes, strong hugs, friendly pats on the back, masculine jokes, satisfied faces and agreements reached.
FAR FROM EXPECTATIONS The history of these two hours fits into the last 52, which began at 9:00 on Sunday morning, when the government AirBus with the national flag took off from Sofia airport and headed towards Washington, and ended on Tuesday at 13:00 when the same plane landed again at home. WHAT ARE THE RESULTS OF THE VISIT? - President Trump expressed readiness to visit Bulgaria. - Progress has been made in resolving the issue of US tourist visas for Bulgarian citizens. - Deliveries of American liquefied gas to Bulgaria are increasing, but not as much as Trump requested. - A NATO naval coordination center will be established in Varna, but there will be no NATO Black Sea base on Bulgarian territory.
The base will be in Romania. - The US will support Bulgaria's efforts to become a regional gas distribution center through the completion of the Greece-Bulgaria interconnector and the floating storage and regasification platform near Alexandroupolis. - The US has nothing against the "Balkan Stream" as part of our cooperation with Serbia in building another interconnector and investing in the reverse flow capacity of the Trans-Balkan gas pipeline - The US tolerates the development of nuclear energy in Bulgaria. - The US has no objections to the construction of the Belene NPP as a Bulgarian project. - The economic dimensions of military cooperation are expanding through additional partnerships in the defense industry and providing Bulgaria with access to high-tech military technologies and equipment from the US. - The US supports us for membership in NATO. - The US will help us combat corruption through active judicial and police cooperation and providing technical assistance and training.
This was recorded in both documents that finalized the visit, which passed like a movie in the last 52 hours: Joint statement by American President Trump and Bulgarian Prime Minister Borisov and joint statement by the governments of the USA and Bulgaria. Both are under the motto: "We are strategic partners and allies!"
Of course, we must stay away from any euphoria because Bulgarian history is rich with many examples of good intentions and wonderful meetings that then fade away and do not turn into real actions. Especially since the situation around Trump is so volatile that it is unknown how long he will occupy the Oval Office and whether his agreements with Borisov will not collapse if he faces impeachment. BUT HOW DID IT ALL START?
What happened and how did this spectacular visit end, which no one in Sofia expected? On Sunday at 9:00, the government plane took off from Sofia Airport with the Prime Minister, two Deputy Prime Ministers, and two ministers on board.
The government team has been greatly reduced. There are no media consultants, no advisors - except for the chief of cabinet of Borissov, the protocol chief, his media advisor, doctor, four security personnel, and about twenty journalists. We have 11 hours ahead of us in the air. At 12:00, on the third hour of the flight, Borissov arrives in a good mood to meet with journalists. He is dressed casually - in jeans, a sport shirt, and a brown leather jacket. For almost half an hour, he answers all kinds of questions. He talks about not allowing a NATO base in the Black Sea to be established in Bulgaria, and sees no reason for President Radev to delay the appointment of Ivan Geshev. He also criticizes the media for publishing articles about his hug with the US ambassador, Ms. Hero Mustafa.
And she added that the journalists were not aware that her children called him "Uncle Boyko". She avoided answering questions about Tsvetanov, whom the Democrats in Washington are helping not only to establish his analytical center, but also to create a future political project, as rumors in Bulgaria have it. "Let them do whatever they want," were his only words for comment. Surprisingly, she revealed that before their separation, she gave him a letter that opens doors for him everywhere in the USA. Probably based on this "authorization", the overseas partners of GERB continue to look favorably at the former Deputy Chairman of GERB. 2:00 PM We land in Reykjavik. Keflavik airport welcomes us - empty, gray, and boring.
And precisely in this emptiness, at six hours drive from Sofia, Borisov once again falls into the arms - of Vasko from Pleven, who works at one of the establishments at the huge airport, where besides the Bulgarian delegation, no one else is noticed. But as they say, the ways of the Lord are unknowable, and along them Borisov always finds a fan. Of course, the incident immediately ends up on the prime minister's Facebook page, while some of the journalists feverishly release the news that he will not allow a NATO Black Sea base on Bulgarian territory. 3:00 PM We board the plane again - directly to Washington. Two hours before landing, Borisov comes to the journalists again. He is excited, slightly worried. He walks around the whole European topic. We talk about the Serbian espionage scandal, he is angry at the Macedonians who declare themselves against the agreement with Bulgaria.
He says that he warned Skopje that they will not see the EU if they continue with their anti-Bulgarian rhetoric. It's almost an hour away from us. He's leaving with "Come on, there's only an hour left until landing..." Clearly, something is bothering him.
BASE "ANDRUS" AND SCANDAL ON FACEBOOK
At 8:40pm Bulgarian time (3:40pm local), we landed at the military airbase "Andrus". The airport, which is used for Air Force One, has hosted American presidents, high-ranking guests of American presidents, and the Pope's plane has also landed on this runway, as well as other heads of state from around the world. The protocol is always the same - a formal welcome, without fanfare, music or other extravagances.
Because the official welcome is at the White House.
Borisov appears on the stairs of the plane in a formal black suit.
Bulgarian Ambassador in the USA, embassy officials and the Deputy Secretary of State welcome him. The protocol is followed. However, the etiquette of protocol is not followed when it comes to the overall appearance and behavior of the Bulgarian government delegation. And this is the first thing that the Bulgarian public sees. As they say - they judge by one's clothes... Vice Prime Minister Krasimir Karakachanov is the first to step down the stairs after Borisov, wearing crumpled jeans, a wrinkled jacket and carrying a bag as if he's dragging a suitcase. The meeting is being broadcasted live on the Prime Minister's Facebook page. A few hours later, Facebook is ablaze with comments: Bulgaria is being neglected, the Prime Minister was not welcomed according to protocol, there is no music and his ministers are following him like servants. The comments overflow with the negative force of Bulgarian genius... We settle in the hotel.
Impeccable organization of the Bulgarian Embassy. We have a few free hours - to sense the atmosphere of the city, dinner... The official reception of the Bulgarian Prime Minister is the next morning before laying a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in the National Cemetery Park 'Arlington'. "WE BEGIN!" Before leaving, Borisov shares a word on Facebook: "We begin" and posts a photo of the armored American limousine with the Bulgarian flag. It's as if he's preparing for battle... The motorcade with the Bulgarian Prime Minister moves slowly through the park alleys. Every 10 meters, soldiers pay their respects. Nearly 400 soldiers from all divisions of the American armed forces participate in the ceremonial part of the event.
When the Bulgarian Prime Minister starts climbing the steps of the Memorial Complex, 21 cannon salutes mark his steps until he stands in front of the entrance, where the wreath-laying ceremony takes place. The anthems of Bulgaria and the US are playing.
Later, the embassy explained that they were surprised by the ceremonial cannon salutes, which are not always used to greet their highest guests. They say that the ceremony with the cannon salutes is an honor that is reserved only for state and government leaders. This is the first sign that the Trump administration is giving special importance to this visit. And another small detail - during the week of Thanksgiving, the US administration practically does not work. And to have an official state visit of a foreign delegation during these days is also an exception and a sign.
However, no one in Sofia is commenting on this - on social media, the hit is the jeans of Karakachanov and the lack of folk music at the "agricultural airport" where Borisov's plane landed. And they are right...
The Prime Minister has two more meetings - with Republicans and Democrats, while journalists are getting ready for the main event. Two hours before the high-level meeting, we head to the White House. We go through the intense security check - dogs sniff our luggage, scanners thoroughly check our passports and badges...
THE WHITE HOUSE AND THE SURPRISEFinally, we approach the White House building. We stand in front of the South entrance, where according to protocol, the host greets his guests. The autumn sun shines on the green lawn in front of the iconic building. At the same time, workers at the North entrance are setting up the giant Christmas tree.
The area for journalists is fenced off, no more than 5-6 meters away from the building. At the entrance of the White House, next to the American flag, is the Bulgarian flag. It is 2:00 PM, the officially announced time for the start of the meeting. We are waiting for the convoy of the Bulgarian Prime Minister. 10-15 minutes pass. Then we notice President Trump coming out of the Oval Office, passing under the colonnade by the Rose Garden, and heading towards the entrance where he is supposed to greet his guest. Meanwhile, Borisov's convoy has already entered the White House grounds and is slowly making its way to the entrance. Trump comes out and at that moment, Borisov's limousine stops in front of him. Handshake. Hugs. Attempts at kisses from Borisov and a slight step back from Trump. Borisov realizes he has crossed a line.
They turn. And enter the White House. After 5 minutes they appear under the white colonnade next to the Rose Garden. They are separated by 20-30 meters from the Oval Office. Behind them, the translators move closely. Borisov says something to Trump and points towards the media. Later we find out that he has informed him that these are Bulgarian journalists who will be very happy if he stops and greets them. Trump nods and after a few steps, the two of them stop.
The American president greets the Bulgarian journalists: "Treat Borisov well" ... Maybe because he doesn't know what will happen to him shortly. Borisov is smiling as if he has won the battle of Waterloo.
Together with us are also the American colleagues on duty who reflect the work of the President and his administration and are not interested in the guest at all, but in the internal political scandal that rocked the previous evening in the USA. Trump fired the head of the Navy. The reason - Navy SEAL Eddie Gallagher was pictured next to the body of his victim - a fighter of ISIS. Defense Secretary Mark Esper fired chief of naval operations Richard Spencer because he proposed a secret agreement with the White House to exonerate the Navy SEAL. Trump overturns the punishment of the "seal" and angers the military. The media in the USA are shaken against the president. And while Trump congratulates the Bulgarian journalists, the Americans attack him.
Trump is trying to ignore us, turns his back and invites Borisov to enter the Oval Office.
INVASION OF THE OVAL OFFICE
At this moment, one of the collaborators in the administration starts to separate the Bulgarian media from the American ones and invites us to enter the Oval Office. (Later we find out that the signal for this was given by Trump after Borisov's insistence, and the correspondence between the two administrations on this topic has been going on for more than 20 days, with each letter from the USA ending with: "It won't happen, but anything is possible if the two of them agree"). Well, they have agreed, but we still don't know that. The mission to separate the two journalistic groups turns out to be impossible and at one point, the entire journalistic army, which was on the green lawn, invades the Oval Office.
Bulgarian media unexpectedly enter the stronghold of American politics. More than 20 cameras from American TV channels, photographers from all agencies, and Bulgarian media capture the meeting in front of the fireplace between Borisov and Trump. Some even confuse the name of the country that Borisov is representing. However, this is not a static photo opportunity with smiles. American media don't miss the moment and sharply attack Trump over the military scandal. He responds at length, trying to control the situation, but they don't stop. The scene is impressive. Reporters attack the president like eagles. Trump obviously hates them, but cannot help responding. Borisov silently observes the aggressive dynamics of the show which the situation presents to him. Никой не е очаквал Тръмп да похвали Борисов, когато останалите лидери от Централна и Източна Европа бяха подложени на критика и порицание от страна на американския президент.
Bulgarian media have managed to sneak in and ask questions about the visit, and an unexpected piece of news is revealed from Trump's response - the president praises Borisov and states that he is ready to visit Bulgaria if he invites him. "I really like your Prime Minister and I would be happy to come to Bulgaria," is the sentence that flies in the air. The Prime Minister manages to bring up the topic of Bulgarian visas, to which he receives an affirmatively favorable response (traditionally). He opens another topic and receives praise again - "Bulgaria spends over 3% of its GDP on defense, which is more than the requested 2% by Trump." Hearing this, the American president reacts spontaneously: "You are an example for Germany."
OFF THE RECORD
At this point, we understand that the meeting has already gone off the record. No one expected Trump to praise Borisov, while the other leaders from Central and Eastern Europe were subject to criticism and reprimands from the American president.
Only in front of the TV cameras the two are in the frame for 15 minutes, but according to the preliminary protocol, the meeting face to face was supposed to be... 5 minutes! After a quarter of a media show in American style, the security manages to free the Oval Office from the journalistic invasion. The substantive part of the talks between the American President and the Bulgarian Prime Minister begins. We leave the White House. We go to the place where we are supposed to wait for Borisov to make a statement after the meeting. We expect this to happen in half an hour. It has been announced in advance that the meeting between the two delegations will last for 40 minutes. Half an hour passes, an hour passes - no one comes. An hour and a half passes... We understand that the Borisov-Trump meeting is still ongoing... Two hours pass...
Finally, the Prime Minister and the four ministers appear.
BORISOV APPEARS SATISFIED
The one-on-one conversation lasted almost an hour, followed by an additional thirty minutes for the meeting between the two delegations. The visit concludes with two documents - a joint statement signed for the first time by both parties, and a framework for strategic partnership. In the statement, Bulgaria and the USA are identified as "two great nations", united by "shared sacrifices" and mutual strategic interests. "Every word is important, every sentence is cause for separate comment," underlines Borisov, with the intention of drawing our attention to the text, "where everything is said." Later, we find out that the documents have been prepared for about two months with a detailed clarification of every word by both sides.
They also contain the results of the visit itself, as well as projections from the discussions for the future of Bulgaria. Borisov gives a statement to the media, but rushes for the meeting with the American Chamber of Commerce, where 30 representatives of the largest corporations are waiting for him... We hurry to pass on the massive information that overwhelms us and spur us to head to the plane. At 6pm US time, we depart from Washington.
BACK IN THE AIR Barely settled on the plane and Borisov arrives to us. He has taken off his black suit, rolled up the sleeves of his dark blue flannel shirt and with a smile awaits us to ask him... And we "start" him. He doesn't hide that he is surprised by the length of the meeting and its result. During the one-on-one conversation, Trump called on the Vice President Pence and Secretary of State Pompeo to be present.
Regarding the most important issue of visas - he explained how well the visa drop with Canada reflects. Trump told him that he made a gesture towards Poland, Borisov replied that it should also be the same for us, etc. "I am convinced that visas will drop," Borisov said. "If you invite me, I will come to Bulgaria," Trump turned to his guest. "I invite you, but with the visa drop," Borisov did not back down. The conversation was probably political-business... However, it is unlikely that visas will drop in the next two to three years, no matter what promises Trump gives. The law is the law and it commands that we have a 3% visa refusal rate for at least three years. Currently, it is at 14%. Не ги търсят по интернет, дори по нашата мостра не искат да ги покажат.
"Geopolitical Analysis: "Russia-USA-China"
Borisov talks about impressing Trump with his geopolitical analysis of the Russia-USA-China relationship, which differs from that presented by analysts in the United States. Borisov's position on Russia as a partner rather than an enemy, his views that Russia should not be fought but used as a potential for mutual economic benefit, appealed to Trump. "What's your problem with Russia? Wealthy countries don't fight!" Borisov said to Trump. China is the problem for the United States. And explained why..."No one has made such an analysis", commented Pompeo, according to the Prime Minister.
RUSSIAN SPIES
Borisov revealed how and why he expelled Russian spies from Bulgaria: "They are not professionals. We caught them "in the act", and whether they were American, we would have expelled them as well. They are not even searched on the internet, they don't even want to show them on our wanted list."
That's why Putin doesn't react, he knows what his people have done, Borissov explained to Trump. "However, I couldn't explain to him how, after the prosecution, the Ministry of Interior and DANS arrested Nikolay Malinov for espionage and he has been charged, a Bulgarian judge let him receive an order from Putin."
AMERICAN LNG - YES, BUT WITHOUT DEPENDENCY! Trump pressed for excessive increase in supplies of American LNG to the point where we would replace one dependency with another. Insisted on specific delivery figures in the documents. Borissov refused. "I did what was necessary - they understood me and I think I have managed to protect Bulgaria's interests to the fullest," the Prime Minister explains. А това не е логистична база, а друг вид база.
Concerning the participation of the United States in our nuclear power plants and their insistence on using American nuclear fuel, the question arises - where will the spent fuel be stored? The Russian side was accepting it, unlike the US. So where will it be stored? On Bulgarian territory! Is this what Bulgarian citizens want? This is not clear from the documents that have been signed.
BLACK SEA BASE FOR NATO - I WILL BE DRIVEN OUT WITH STONES!
A Black Sea base for NATO on our territory - no, I do not want it! A coordination center in Varna - yes. Exercises in the Black Sea - as many as you want. But a base - no, because in Bulgaria I will be driven out with stones, stated Borisov to Trump. "The coordination center is in Varna, the headquarters in Romania. These are logistics bases. But this is not a logistics base, it is a different type of base. Не му е било лесно да направи Близкия изток силен, израелският вестник "القدس":
"So, the Black Sea is safe, and I hope our most beautiful resorts and golf clubs, will be visited by President Trump," said the Prime Minister to the media.
It is clear that Borisov is avoiding the word "base". However, it is not clear if this coordination center is not a step towards building a base. And in times of war, will it not become part of the overall military structures? In this sense, will it not become a target of enemy fire?
Borisov insists - I have received Pompeo's support on all issues. And he does not hide his concerns, which he had at the beginning of the meeting - when he found out that both Pence and Pompeo will be present at the conversation, he thought to himself - either "they will scold me" or they will pressure me.
WE ARE NOT A DESPERATE SPOUSE
"Trump is tough and defends his interests. It was not easy for him to make the Middle East strong," the Israeli newspaper "القدس" reported.
"I was also firm and our interests are protected!", says Borisov confidently. Whether this is true, we will find out in the future. On the topic of the Balkans, the Prime Minister directly told Trump that he is receiving unreliable information about the processes taking place here. After giving him his vision for the region's development, he warned him: "Stop treating us like a meek and desperate wife, because we can also play rough!" The truth is, no matter how unexpected it may be, Borisov set the agenda for this meeting and received a response on all the topics he had put on the table. He achieved what was possible in such relationships. Some may perceive this as the behavior of a colony-state, while others may be dissatisfied that we have not fully accepted the demands of the US. However, the Prime Minister has been trying to walk on the razor's edge...
At the end of the conversation, Trump invited him to tour and show him the White House. He told him that he had prepared a gift for the "first lady", but after finding out that he was "happily divorced", he will not present it to him because he will have to have gifts for many ladies, seeing how he looks. The conversation took place in a joking manner, as often happens between statesmen who throw protocol in the trash. Apparently "the chemistry has happened," as predicted by Pardew and as the translator of the meeting said. Borisov even expressed regret that he did not listen to his mother in time and did not learn English, in order to have a more direct communication. The result of their visit also has an internal political effect for the prime minister. He is now calm about the end of his mandate and returns to domestic politics.
"Confidently states: "You will see that today Radev will sign a decree for Geshev!" Ten hours later, at 1 p.m., we landed at Sofia Airport. The first news we learned is that the President has signed a decree for Geshev. "Call me the prophet Boyko," Borisov turns to the media, who believe that he has had inside information about the President's actions. "No, I swear! But Radev's logic is this - on the exact day when we return from the visit, he releases the decree. So you have something to write about!" We leave. And we start writing. About a truly spectacular visit. And what will follow from it - we will only observe. Will it bring benefits for Bulgaria or new dependencies - time will tell."
In a world of weapon rattling - to what extent will the framework of strategic cooperation with the United States ensure peace in the region, or turn us into a front line as part of the American policy of spheres of influence, stretching from the Baltic countries to Bulgaria and the Western Balkans? The troubled times are before us... The meeting ended, and questions arise one after another. And they are becoming increasingly worrisome...
