The war in Ukraine poses a danger to the Black Sea environment, former Environment and Water Minister Yulian Popov said. He discussed the risks on the program “The Big Consequences.”
Popov said the greatest dangers were local ones. He addressed drone strikes against ships in the Black Sea, including the latest incident from the previous week, when a vessel carrying hazardous cargo was attacked.
He stressed that a serious investigation was needed to determine not only the immediate impact on the marine environment but also the long-term consequences. The investigation should establish what cargo was being transported and how it might react in the sea, Popov said, adding that such an analysis would not be easy.
The former minister called for avoiding panic over possible sea pollution. Instead, he said, attention should be focused on the broader impact of Russia’s aggression against Ukraine and the increasingly frequent drone attacks on the marine environment.
Popov also commented on the strike against a container ship near Kaliakra. In his view, Thursday’s attack was probably deliberately timed to take place during the meeting of the defense ministers.
Three days earlier, the defense ministers of Bulgaria, Romania and Turkey had met in Sofia together with the chiefs of defense of the three countries. Security in the Black Sea region was a central topic, against the backdrop of growing threats to shipping and critical infrastructure. News of the container ship being hit near Kaliakra emerged during the meeting itself.
