The foreign ministers of several European countries, Canada and Japan have reaffirmed their unwavering support for the International Criminal Court in a joint statement. Their response came after the United States announced plans to impose wide-ranging sanctions on the institution.
The statement was signed by the foreign ministers of Canada, Denmark, Germany, France, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom. They warned that, if implemented, the sanctions would have a significant impact on the Court’s work, its dedicated staff and their families.
The ministers stressed that the institution’s employees work every day to bring people accused of the gravest international crimes to justice and to support their victims.
Norwegian Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide described the US plans to expand sanctions against the International Criminal Court as deeply troubling.
He said Norway, together with other countries, was continuously assessing how best to support and protect the Court in the current situation. He added that countries were also considering whether the actual imposition of the planned measures could be prevented.
