Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko said that neither Russia nor Belarus needs a war in the western direction and that the two countries are trying to avoid one. He made the comments during a meeting with Russian Defence Minister Andrei Belousov.
“We are preparing for war, but we are trying to avoid it at any cost. Neither we nor you need it. But to prevent it, we must always be ready,” Lukashenko said.
He said the two countries’ joint force in the western direction remains necessary and is currently in good shape. The Belarusian president also stated that his country is fulfilling its obligations to protect the borders of the Union State.
Lukashenko thanked Russia for supporting the joint troop grouping established within the framework of the Collective Security Treaty Organization in the western direction. He said the Belarusian army was fulfilling its role and that Minsk was meeting its obligations to Russia, just as Moscow was meeting its commitments to Belarus.
“Thank you for maintaining the joint forces that we formed together within the CSTO in the western direction, despite all the difficulties and challenges,” Lukashenko said.
He added that the countries’ opponents were aware of their readiness, although there were probably still no specifically identified enemies. Lukashenko also pointed to strong cooperation between the two countries in other agencies and areas, saying there was therefore no reason to question their commitments to protect the borders of the Union State.
