Russian President Vladimir Putin said that Russia and Ukraine could reach an agreement to end the war. He confirmed Moscow’s readiness to take part in upcoming trilateral talks with the United States and Ukraine, while also declaring that the territories lost by Kyiv were historic Russian lands rather than Ukrainian territory.
Putin insisted that Russia would achieve all the goals of what Moscow calls its “special military operation.” He made the remarks in Moscow, where he attended an event at the Bolshoi Theatre marking the 150th anniversary of the Russian Theatre Union. After speaking from the stage, the president gave an interview in the foyer to Pavel Zarubin, a journalist with Vesti.
Putin said Russia and Ukraine were so closely connected that they could reach an agreement. He said Russians and Ukrainians were essentially one people. “I think we can reach an agreement; we agree on this issue,” the Russian president said.
He was also asked about his meeting with Steve Witkoff, US President Donald Trump’s special envoy, which took place on October 21. “As for our talks with representatives of the American administration, yes, we agreed that we are ready to resume our trilateral contacts,” Putin said.
Russia will monitor developments in the coming days before the start of Russian-American-Ukrainian negotiations scheduled for next month, he said. According to Putin, the discussions will focus on security issues affecting Russia and Ukraine and possibly, in a broader context, European security.
The Russian president agreed with the US position that discussions about future security for Ukraine and Russia would necessarily have to include Europe’s security architecture. He said the trilateral talks would focus on guarantees for the security of both countries after peace had been achieved.
“The purpose of these talks will be to discuss guaranteeing the security of Ukraine and Russia after the peace agreements have been finalized, rather than as a result of a short-term cessation of hostilities. We are ready to resume these contacts in order to achieve this goal,” Putin said.
He warned that defeating Russia on the battlefield was impossible and that inflicting a strategic defeat on it was unrealistic. Putin said those who had sought Russia’s strategic defeat throughout history, including people who pursued that goal today, would understand the realities and recognize that living in harmony with Russia was preferable and in the interests of their own people.
