A large-scale defense system has been built over the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv, to protect it from remotely controlled Russian Shahed jet drones. The announcement was made on Telegram by Serhii “Flash” Beskrestnov, an adviser to Ukraine’s president on defense technologies.
He described the initiative as part of what is known as an “urban war,” being conducted alongside the fighting on the front. In his account, this form of warfare also includes special operations, one of which is the protection of the capital with electronic-warfare systems against remotely controlled Shahed drones.
According to Beskrestnov, one of the main technologies used by Russian operators to locate targets and control unmanned aircraft from a distance is MESH radio communication. A radio modem installed directly on the drone allows a Russian operator to control the aircraft from the territory of the Russian Federation.
This capability made it necessary to urgently build a protective dome over the capital using electronic-warfare equipment. Its purpose is to disrupt the aircraft’s radio communications and make remote control more difficult.
Beskrestnov said the task was large and ambitious, requiring extensive work across the entire city within only a few weeks. All major manufacturers of electronic-warfare equipment took part in the operation, producing and installing the systems around the clock.
The General Staff, the Ministry of Defense, the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the National Security and Defense Council, the armed forces and other Ukrainian military units worked on the operation. Beskrestnov said it remained under the president’s constant supervision.
The implementation was exceptionally difficult both technically and logistically. Equipment and antennas had to be deployed at hundreds of locations throughout the city.
Beskrestnov said the operation had forced Russia to stop, modernize the Shahed drones and look for new technical solutions.
