The European Commission has requested clarification from Bulgaria regarding the amendments made to the Education Law, which banned "LGBT propaganda in schools." This was made clear in a letter sent to the Minister of Education, Galin Tsokov, by the European Commissioner for Equality, Helena Dalli, reported POLTICO.
The letter was sent on August 13, after President Rumen Radev promulgated the amendments to the Law. The minister has two weeks to provide an explanation for the necessity of these legislative changes.
Recall that at the beginning of August, the National Assembly adopted the amendments that prohibit the discussion of sexual orientation and gender identity in our schools.
The spokeswoman for the commission said that they are waiting for an explanation from Sofia before beginning an assessment of whether these legislative changes do not violate European law.
"Equality and respect for dignity and fundamental rights are fundamental values of the EU and are enshrined in the treaties. The European Commission is ready to fight discrimination and the challenges faced by the LGBT community, including in education," said the European Commission.
A similar law exists only in Hungary within the EU and the European Commission is taking legal action against the government of Viktor Orban for violating the basic rights of citizens.
